I wrote Gravitational kook for a collaboration between the Conservatorio Superior de Música Joaquín Rodrigo and the Instituto de Física Corpuscular (IFIC). Each year, IFIC researchers gave us a talk on a topic, we wrote music inspired by it, and it all came together in a science outreach event followed by a concert.
The year I took part, the topic was gravitational waves. What caught my engineer’s mind was the effort behind finding one: the signal is buried in noise, and the scientists have to filter the data over and over until they can finally pick it out.
So I wrote the piece the same way. It starts as chaos: too much happening at once to make much sense of. As it goes on, the layers clear and the main theme slowly comes to the surface.
