I wrote We fade away in 2021, towards the end of my composition studies. There was no orchestra waiting for it, so I was free to choose the instrumentation.

One of the instruments I included was the electric guitar: it’s my instrument, and I wanted it to blend into the orchestra as one more colour instead of fighting it. It opens the piece in dialogue with the timpani, and stays tucked among the percussion most of the time; only now and then does it take a more melodic role, though a secondary one, alongside other instruments.

Throughout the piece, short rising lines keep coming back, like someone trying to reach something while fading away. Towards the end, the orchestra holds still, with no pulse, while the percussion contrasts with rhythms over the accompaniment.
